Causes of the Civil War

Image
The industrial north was progressing so much faster than the south. The north had internal improvements and trade and the Erie canal made in 1825 really set the north up for success. The North was industrializing and the North was flourishing, the north had a huge booming market economy. Where as  the south was known as the agriculture South. The reasoning behind that is because the south was focused on cash crops. The south was full of poor farmers and the slave owners controlled everything. When Eli Whitney created the cotton gin and that created the need for slaves. The life of a slave was terrible the children received two shirts a year and when they are gone they go naked. The food was terrible the slave owners gave the slaves just enough to let them live. A Lot of revolting happened such as poisoning the masters, breaking tools and burning sheds.  There were many abolition movements such as The liberator which was a anti-slavery newspaper ad a major one was the Underground Rail

State v. Mann

Image
John Mann was charged 10 dollars for shooting a slave in the back the state argued that slavery is unpleasant ,intent was to kill, damages should be there for the owner, in 481 Ad Justinian empire set an early precedent that it is illegal to harm slaves and in 1256 ad with Spanish law. The state demanded compensation for the actions of John Mann. John Mann damaged loaned property and that is wrong. The bible says good treatment of a slave is required and John Mann caused deliberate harm, he rendered the property worthless.  The attorneys on the side of John Mann argued that slaves are declared runaways you can kill them or cause harm to them, which is what John did. They argued that he can not be charged assault on property, the argued that slavery is never condemned in the bible. Since he owned the slave for one year he can treat her as he wanted. They argued saying that the amount of the fine is too high and that he didn't kill anyone he only wounded the slave. The judge of toda

Fugitive Slave Law

Fugitive Slave act was passed by congress in 1850, signed into law by President Fillmore. The fugitive slave act was part of the Compromise of 1850 (Most Controversial), the Fugitive Slave act was what created the idea of bounty hunting. Made it a law to return slaves that were up north to send them back to the slave owners. In 1855 the Wisconsin Supreme court ruled that the Fugitive Slave act was unconstitutional. Ableman v. Booth was the c ase in 1859 that the Supreme Court overruled the states. If someone in the north did not return the slave they were charged 1,000 dollar fine. The fine comes out to about 31,000 dollars today.

Henry Clay was known as the great compromiser. Henry Clay had a way to drive the public insane. Henry Clay created a compromise known as the Missouri compromise. This compromise allowed Missouri to enter in as a slave state and allow Maine to enter in as a free state. This was supposed keep the balance between slave and free state. Henry Clay started bounty hunting. Henry Clay was trying to faze out slavery. Let it happen over time to keep the South from falling. In 1833 he solved the problems he created, Henry Clay owned 60 slaves but released them before his death. Henry Clay paid for all of his slaves education. The Frederick Douglas Game

My name is John Whittier and I was born on December 17 th in 1807 in the great state of Massachusetts. I was born into a Quaker family and I am a poet and I advocate of abolition of slavery. I grew up on a farm with my parents, my brother, my sisters, maternal aunt, paternal uncle, and a constant flow of visitors and hired hands. I am color blind and I found out because I could not tell between a ripe and unripe strawberry which is a weird way to find out. I also suffered from bad health and physical frailty all my life. I did not receive a formal education, however I loved to read and study books on Quakerism. I wrote my first poem called “The Exiles’ Departure” and it got sent to the Newburyport and the editor William Lloyd Garrison, it was published it on June 8 th , 1826. The funny thing about that is I thought my poems were not ready for the public eye so someone sent the poem in without me knowing. I raised all the money possible to attend Haverhill Academy. I went to academy

How has the Bible Condoned Slavery?

Image
People constantly look to religion when determining their stance on a moral argument. But what if historical texts do not explicitly state what is deemed morally acceptable? This can be examined through the issue of slavery throughout the Bible. One can observe how slavery can both be supported and condemned in the Bible based on interpretation.   In the Old Testament of the Holy Bible there are verses that support the use of slavery and in some cases, slavery is encouraged. First of all, in Genesis 9:25-27 “Cursed be Canaan! The lowest of slaves will he be to his brothers.” He also said “praise be to the lord, the god of Shem! May Canaan be the slave of Shem. This bible verse shows Noah giving his grandson a curse, showing to the people that slavery was around, and it was justified. There is more than one bible verse that mention bondservants obeying masters, such as Ephesians 6:5, Colossians 3:22, and Peter 2:18. In the New testament in the Holy Bible changes the wording and the id

The Constitution and the Court

Image
In the supreme court sit nine justices that read and analyze court cases and make sure that no one was  violated of their constitutional rights. The supreme court is the highest judicial court on earth, when the  court was established in 1789 and it was made to uphold the rule of law and to protect the union. In the  supreme court petitions arise in thousands, the justices sit in their chambers and read the cases and  they come together and have meetings. In these meetings they do several things. First, they discuss  what cases they would like to hear. Secondly, during these meetings they vote on cases that they  already have heard. The chief justices help guide the meeting to make sure everyone is heard,  one chief justice put a rule that everyone speaks once before someone speaks twice. Since the supreme  court was established in 1789 there have been about one hundred supreme court justices, the average  time for a justice to be in their seat is sixteen years. John Marshal
